Side Stories 2022, Feb. 11-20, is an immersive community experience celebrating ten nights of cinematic art on the urban exterior. This year’s theme is Love Stories, an opportunity to explore love stories in the traditional and non-traditional senses, exploring the ways that love keeps us going, and the interactions between art and love. The large-format digital film installation will project short works from five Colorado artists onto large, exterior walls and other city surfaces in RiNo. The projection sites, selected to establish a walkable art experience, will draw traffic through RiNo during quieter winter evenings.
Following a juried proposal review process from Dec. 3-10, five Colorado filmmakers will be invited to participate in Side Stories, receiving grants of $5,000 to create a 5-minute original film loop. Film types may include, but are not limited to, live action, documentary, historical, motion graphics, animation and experimental. Selected artists will be asked to provide audio statements that will be synced to each film and accessed by event goers via QR Code and the website. All work must be original.
Each selected artist will be assigned a specific wall in the RiNo neighborhood. The walls will vary in dimension, informing the size of the projected film. Specifications of each projection site will be mapped and artists are encouraged to incorporate site attributes—such as windows, doors, cantilevers, etc.—into their films.
The Immersive Experience
To ensure a quality experience for event goers, we will create an online walking map of the installations. This will encourage visitors to peruse the walls and listen to each artist’s recorded statement as they walk throughout RiNo. The map will highlight the location of each projected film and include nearby partner businesses and suggestions for where to stop for a warm drink, to grab a bite or to shop along the way.
The video specs will be finalized after walls are selected. At this time, please plan for a standard resolution of 1920x1080HD and export H.264 for Quicktime. Each artist’s statement must be recorded and produced to be uploaded for streaming via .mp3. Artists are asked to submit concepts that may be applied to an exterior wall, in which they describe how their unique piece will interact with an unusual RiNo canvas. Please submit a concept that can work on multiple wall dimensions and surfaces.
